French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed two French nationals back home following their release from detention in Iran, in a significant diplomatic development.
Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris returned to France after being freed by Iran, where they had been held for over three years on spying charges that France had described as unfounded. They were detained in 2022 and were later confined to the French embassy in Tehran.
Reports indicate that their release followed an understanding between the two countries.
Iran has said that France would release an Iranian student and withdraw a case at the International Court of Justice. However, French authorities have not officially confirmed the details of any such agreement.
