Key political developments have emerged from Europe following elections in Germany and Slovenia, indicating a leadership shift in Germany and a close contest in Slovenia.

In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has taken the lead in the Rhineland-Palatinate state election, ahead of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which faces defeat after ruling the state for over 35 years.

CDU candidate Gordon Schneider claimed victory and pledged reforms in education, security, health, and economic policy.

In Slovenia, Prime Minister Robert Golob claimed victory in parliamentary elections after a tightly contested race, with his liberal party securing around 28.54% of votes and 29 seats.

He narrowly leads right-wing leader Janez Jansa, whose party won 28.17% of votes and 28 seats in the 90-member parliament. However, neither side has reached the 46-seat majority, making smaller parties crucial for government formation.
