Poetry is more than just words—it is emotion, imagination, and a reflection of life itself. Across centuries and cultures, it has brought people closer through shared thoughts and feelings. To celebrate this art that promotes dialogue and peace, World Poetry Day is observed every year on March 21.

Poetry uses rhythm, rhyme, meter, and figurative language to express human experiences with deep emotion and artistic beauty. Through metaphors, similes, personification, and imagery, it evokes personal sensitivities while expressing ideas, emotions, and perspectives universally.

World Poetry Day was established in 1999 during the 30th session of UNESCO held in Paris, where March 21 was declared the official day. The first celebration took place on March 21, 2000, and it has been observed annually across the globe since then. Poetry serves as a powerful medium to highlight emotions, ideas, and social issues in society.

The day aims to preserve poetry as an art form, honor its unique power, promote linguistic diversity, and provide opportunities for endangered languages to reach a wider audience. Literature is considered a mirror of society and a means to promote peace and inclusion. Keeping this in mind, this year’s theme for World Poetry Day is “Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion.”

On this occasion, poetry readings, literary seminars, and cultural programs are organized worldwide. It offers a chance to honor writers and poets, promote the oral tradition of poetry, and encourage collaboration between poetry and other art forms such as theatre, dance, and music—celebrating one of humanity’s most valuable cultural and linguistic expressions.
