Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino has emphasized the role of football, and the 2026 World Cup, as a unifying force during a time of geopolitical turmoil.

During FIFA’s 35th Council Meeting in Zurich, Infantino said the organisation was committed to using the World Cup as an opportunity to build bridges. The 2026 World Cup begins on June 11 and will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Iran have qualified for the tournament and are scheduled to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. However, that participation has been much debated in the wake of conflict in West Asia.

Iran’s football federation had opened talks with FIFA about potentially relocating its matches but the global governing body have said they hope all teams play as per their original schedules.
