Nepal’s Ghode Jatra Ceremony:  Army teams perform equestrian art

President of Nepal Ramchandra Paudel observed a special ceremony of Ghode Jatra organized by the Nepal Army at Sainik Manch in Tundikhel ground today. On the occasion, a contingent of the Nepal Army offered a salute in his honour.

It is annually organised on the new moon day of the Chaitra month of the Nepali Calendar. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal, ministers, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions, and other high-ranking officials.

There is a public holiday in Kathmandu on the day of Ghode Jatra when people gather around Tundikhel to see the jatra. Keeping the tradition alive, Nepal Army men race the horses in Tundikhel ground to scare off demons according to folklore.

On the occasion, Nepal Army teams performed equestrian art including horse racing, horse jumping, charger horse racing, historical use of horses, horse attacks and fire jumping.
