Comedy-Thriller ‘One Battle After Another’ Dominates 98th Oscars

The 98th Academy Awards concluded with the comedy-thriller One Battle After Another emerging as the biggest winner, taking home six trophies including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson won multiple honours for writing, directing and producing the film. Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his performance, while Andy Jurgensen received Best Film Editing and Cassandra Kulukundis won the first-ever Best Casting award.

The vampire thriller Sinners secured four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan and Best Original Screenplay for director Ryan Coogler. The film also won Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who became the first female cinematographer to win the award.

Guillermo del Toro’s gothic sci-fi Frankenstein won Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. In the acting categories, Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, while Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons.

Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier won Best International Feature Film, marking Norway’s first win in the category. In the documentary section, All the Empty Rooms won Best Documentary Short, while Mr. Nobody Against Putin won Best Documentary Feature.

In animation, The Girl Who Cried Pearls won Best Animated Short, while K-Pop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.” Other winners included Best Visual Effects for Avatar: Fire and Ash and Best Sound for F1.

The ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, also featured an “In Memoriam” tribute honouring film legends including Robert Redford, Diane Keaton and Claudia Cardinale, among others. Indian cinema personalities including Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar and documentary filmmaker S. Krishnaswamy were also remembered.
