Sri Lankan Government has made a QR code registration system compulsory for all vehicles seeking fuel from 6 AM today, Energy Ministry announced. Authorities said fuel will not be issued at filling stations without a valid registered QR code.
The move comes amid disruptions to global fuel supply routes linked to the ongoing military tensions in the Middle East, which have triggered a sharp rise in domestic demand. Officials said the country must carefully manage limited fuel reserves to sustain essential economic activities.
The ministry also cited illegal fuel hoarding and racketeering as key factors behind increased demand.
The new system aims to curb such practices and ensure fair fuel access for the public while maintaining economic stability. Sri Lanka had previously imposed QR code-based quotas during the peak of the economic crisis in 2022.
