The India women’s hockey team opened their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a dominant 4–0 win over Uruguay women’s hockey team in Hyderabad yesterday.
The hosts made a bright start, dominating possession and pressing hard for an early breakthrough. However, their inability to pick the right final pass, coupled with Uruguay’s resolute defence, ensured the opening quarter ended goalless.
They broke the deadlock in the second quarter when Sunelita Toppo scored the opener. Subsequently, Ishika, Lalremsiami and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal also found the back of the net to ensure an emphatic win for the home side.
With all three points, India moved to the top of Pool B, above Scotland women’s team, who defeated Wales 1–0.
