The United Nations (UN) has hailed India’s banking inclusion programme as a global model for empowering women and girls.
Director of Policy at UN Women, Sandra Hendriks, said India’s initiative of providing digital identification and easier access to bank accounts for women has set an example for financial inclusion worldwide.
She also noted that the government’s efforts have enabled over two hundred and ninety million women to access banking services.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, now in its 12th year, has significantly expanded financial access, with women holding about 56% of the accounts opened under the scheme.
