Coimbatore will soon be home to a dedicated Conservation Centre for the Nilgiri Tahr at Gandhipuram, Tamil Nadu. The foundation stone for the Centre was laid yesterday by the Chief Minister of MK Stalin.

Being established at a cost of ₹25.14 crore, this Centre is a flagship initiative under Project Nilgiri Tahr, the Government of Tamil Nadu’s ambitious programme to secure the future of this iconic mountain species.

The Centre will showcase the unique montane ecosystems of the Western Ghats, create immersive interpretation spaces on the life and landscape of the Nilgiri Tahr, and facilitate scientific research, conservation education and capacity building.

It will also serve as a hub for public awareness, policy dialogue and knowledge exchange.
