Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh today graced the 43rd Foundation Day of National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) at Handloom Haat, Janpath, NewDelhi. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary Textiles, GoI, Dr M Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), senior officials of MoT and NHDC, weavers, cooperative societies, and other stakeholders from across the country werealso present on the occasion.
The celebration formed a significant highlight of the ongoing Special Handloom Expo (21 February – 2 March 2026), amplifying the Government of India’s continued commitment to promote Swadeshi handloom products, strengthen direct market linkages between weavers and consumers, and enhance sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans.
A multi-lingual comic book was released during the event, designed to create wider awareness about the handloom sector, particularly among younger audiences. The publication aims to present the legacy, processes and cultural relevance of handloom weaving in an engaging and accessible format.
The ceremony also included the felicitation of distinguished weavers and artisans, who were honoured for their exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and enduring contribution to preserving and promoting India’s traditional weaving practices.
Enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the celebration, a Paridhan Pradarshini was conducted, presenting an elegant display of handloom garments and creations that reflected the diversity, craftsmanship and aesthetic excellence embedded in the nation’s rich regional weaving traditions.
Addressing the gathering, Giriraj Singh highlighted the pivotal role of the handloom sector in sustaining livelihoods and promoting sustainable, indigenous production systems.
He reiterated the Government’s vision of strengthening domestic manufacturing, expanding market access for artisans, and encouraging citizens to support Swadeshi textiles and spoke about the roadmap that NHDC should adopt while acknowledging the good work being done by the Corporation.
