Venezuelan authorities have granted amnesty to 379 political prisoners after a new mass amnesty law was enacted following the ouster of former leader Nicolás Maduro.
The law, unanimously approved by Venezuela’s National Assembly, aims to offer relief to individuals charged or convicted on political grounds during decades of authoritarian governance.
National Assembly deputy Jorge Arreaza said in a televised interview that requests have been submitted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to the courts to grant amnesty measures for the 379 people, who are expected to be released “between tonight and tomorrow morning.”
The legislation follows years of political detentions and comes amid broader reforms under interim authorities after Maduro’s departure.
