Tropical Cyclone Mitchell has intensified as it moves toward Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology upgraded the system to a Category Three cyclone, warning of destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and possible flash flooding across the area.

Major ports have been closed as a precaution, including Port Hedland which is the world’s largest iron ore export hub serving major mining companies.

The federal agency forecast Cyclone Mitchell to make landfall between the coastal towns of Exmouth and Onslow. Authorities are urging residents to take safety precautions as severe weather conditions are expected to continue.
