A powerful storm has swept across large parts of the eastern and southern United States, bringing heavy snow, ice, and bitter cold that have disrupted travel and daily life from Texas to New York and Connecticut.

Seventeen states and Washington, D.C., have declared weather emergencies as icy roads, low visibility, and dangerously cold wind chills threaten transportation and infrastructure.

Forecasters warned of “bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills” stretching from the southern plains to the Northeast, creating prolonged hazards for travel and outdoor activities.

Communities are mobilizing to support vulnerable residents, with volunteers providing rides to warming shelters and distributing essential food and water.

Officials cautioned that prolonged exposure to the extreme cold can quickly lead to hypothermia or frostbite.

Meanwhile, families in Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced a rare snowy Sunday as the storm moved through the region.

Light snow, sleet, and freezing rain coated roads and sidewalks, turning neighborhoods into impromptu sledding spots for children, even as hazardous travel conditions persisted.

The winter mix offered both outdoor enjoyment and caution to an area unaccustomed to measurable snowfall.
