Tensions between the United States and its northern neighbour have escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it enters into a trade deal with China.
In a social media post, U.S. President Trump warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that such a deal would endanger his country, stating that all Canadian goods and products entering the U.S. would immediately face a 100% tariff.
In response, Canadian PM Carney has urged Canadians to buy domestic products to safeguard the country’s economy from global economic threats. This move indicates a shift toward prioritising local business over heavy reliance on international trade.
During a recent visit to China, Canadian PM described the Asian superpower as a “reliable and predictable partner” and encouraged European leaders in Davos to seek investment from the world’s second-largest economy.
Earlier, on Thursday, U.S. President Trump withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his Board of Peace initiative, which aims to resolve global conflicts.
