In a significant leap toward strengthening the food security and logistics infrastructure of the Kashmir valley, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has successfully facilitated the arrival of the first-ever full railway rake (42 wagons) of foodgrains (rice) at the Anantnag goods shed from Sangrur rail terminal in Punjab.
Earlier, the valley recieved a mini rake—consisting of 21 wagons carrying 1,384 tons—this achievement marks the transition to high-capacity rail transport.
Following extensive deliberations with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) aimed at optimizing logistics and reducing transportation costs, a full-scale operation was greenlit.
The Capacity was doubled with the full rake comprised 42 wagons, carrying a total of 2,768 metric tons of rice was transported.
The consignment was loaded at the Sangrur rail terminal in Punjab on January 21st and reached Anantnag in less than 24 hours, demonstrating unprecedented efficiency in the supply chain saving time.
Despite a brief delay in unloading yesterday due to inclement weather, the handling operations were successfully completed today.
This milestone will revolutionize the distribution network in the Kashmir Valley. By transitioning from mini rakes and road transport to full-capacity railway wagons, Railway department ensures Cost Efficiency, Supply Stability and Environmental Benefits with reducing reliance on heavy truck traffic via the national highway.
The coordination between the Railways, FCI, and the Jammu & Kashmir administration ensure the seamless delivery of essential commodities to the public in the region.
