A massive forest fire broke out in the Wuyan area of Pampore, triggering fear and panic among residents of nearby localities as thick smoke and towering flames were seen rising from the forest area.
The fire was visible from a long distance, raising serious concerns about the safety of surrounding habitations and forest resources.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, joint teams of the Forest Department and the Wildlife Department rushed to the spot and immediately initiated firefighting operations.
Officials said the blaze posed a significant threat due to dry conditions prevailing in the area.
After sustained and strenuous efforts lasting several hours, the teams successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further. Timely intervention helped avert major damage, while the exact extent of loss to forest cover is currently being assessed. No casualties were reported in the incident.
Meanwhile, Forest Department officials issued a strong advisory to the general public, urging people to strictly avoid lighting fires near forest areas.
They emphasized that prolonged dry weather has reduced moisture levels, making forests highly vulnerable to fires, and warned that even a small spark could trigger major incidents. Public cooperation was sought to safeguard forests and wildlife.
