A Japanese court today sentenced the killer of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to life in prison. Tetsuya Yamagami was convicted of killing Abe with a homemade gun during the former leader’s campaign rally in Nara in July 2022.

The judgment comes more than three years after the daytime assassination of Abe, an event that shocked the world.

A guilty verdict had been widely expected after Yamagami admitted to the killing during his first hearing at the Nara District Court in October. The main focus was on the severity of the sentence.

Abe was a towering figure in Japanese public life, and his assassination stunned a country where gun crimes are extremely rare.
