Tourist arrivals to Japan hit record highs in December and for the whole of 2025, despite a sharp drop in visitors from China, said Japanese Tourism Minister Yasushi Kaneko said on Tuesday

“Tourist numbers from China plunged 45% in December to around 330,000, accounting for less than 10% of the 3.6 million visitors that month,” he added.

The decline followed a warning from Beijing in November urging Chinese citizens not to travel to Japan amid political tensions over Taiwan.

Despite this, Japan welcomed a record 42.7 million tourists in 2025, surpassing 40 million for the first time.

Total spending by inbound visitors also reached an all-time high of 9.5 trillion yen, or about 60 billion dollars, underlining the resilience of Japan’s tourism sector.
