The final hearing in the insurrection trial of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is underway at the Seoul Central District Court.
The court had initially planned to conclude the special counsel’s sentencing request and hear the defendants’ final statements during the sentencing hearing scheduled for the 9th. However, as the review of documentary evidence for other defendants took longer than expected, an additional sentencing hearing was held on this day.
Yoon was indicted in January last year on charges of leading an insurrection through his declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024. Seven other defendants, including a former defence minister and former National Police Agency chief Cho Ji-ho, are also on trial. They are accused of playing key roles in the insurrection through their involvement in the brief implementation of martial law.
Yoon is charged with staging a riot aimed at subverting the Constitution after allegedly conspiring with the former defence minister and others to illegally declare martial law in the absence of war or an equivalent national emergency.
