UN Security Council Meets Over Russia’s Ukraine Attacks

The U.N. Security Council officials warned that Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during a deep winter freeze, leaving millions without heat, electricity and water.

During an emergency meeting, U.N. political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo said the council that Russian strikes have escalated as temperatures plunge far below freezing.

While, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. Tammy Bruce said that Washington was closer to a peace deal than at any point since the conflict began, but said Russia had escalated by launching a nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile near the Polish and NATO border.

The meeting held following a request by Ukraine after Russia used an Oreshnik-type missile against it.
