Iranian authorities indicated that they could intensify their crackdown on what has become the largest wave of anti-government protests in the country.

Following the protests, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed to defend Iran’s national interests and urged citizens to remain alert to what it described as enemy plots.

Several international airlines have suspended or cancelled flights to and from Iran amid the unrest. Authorities have also imposed wide-ranging mobile and internet restrictions across the country.

Protests have spread across Iran since December 28, initially triggered by soaring inflation.

The demonstrations quickly turned political, with protesters demanding an end to the rule of the Islamic clergy.
