Iranian leaders have said the nation will offer no leniency to “rioters” but will respect citizens’ right to demonstrate, as protests continue across the country.

The remarks came after US President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face consequences if authorities killed more demonstrators, following more than a week of sometimes-deadly protests.

The unrest began on December 28, when shopkeepers in Tehran staged a strike over rising prices and economic stagnation. The protests have since spread to other cities and broadened to include political demands.

At least 12 people have been killed since December 30 in localized clashes, including members of the security forces, according to official announcements.

In the latest developments, Iran announced a monthly allowance for every citizen to ease economic pressure, equivalent to around 3.5 percent of the average monthly wage. However, despite this measure, there are still no signs of stabilization.

In the mean time Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India issued a trave advisory for the Indian citizens in Iran.
