At least 14 people were killed after being swept away by flash floods in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, an official said on Tuesday, as search operations continued for those missing.

Heavy rainfall early on Monday triggered flash floods on Siau Island, located in the Siau Tagulandang Biaro region, according to local authorities.

So far, 18 people have been injured. Sixteen rescuers have been deployed to search for four people who were still missing as of Tuesday.

North Sulawesi Governor Yulius Selvanus said the floods destroyed hundreds of houses and several government buildings.

The flash floods occurred during the peak of the wet season on Sulawesi Island, as forecast by Indonesia’s weather agency.
