A South Korean court on Friday issued a fresh arrest warrant for former president Yoon Suk Yeol, extending his detention as he faces charges linked to his 2024 attempt to impose martial law. Prosecutors indicted Yoon in November on multiple charges, including aiding the enemy, alleging that he ordered drone flights over North Korea to bolster his efforts to declare military rule.
The arrest warrant in the case was due to expire on January 18, but Friday’s order extends it by up to six months. Yoon has been in custody for several months while multiple criminal trials continue. Yoon briefly suspended civilian rule on December 3, 2024, triggering massive protests and a political showdown in parliament. He was officially removed from office in April last year.
