Kosovo’s ruling party has won the vote after a year-long political deadlock that delayed key international funding.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party secured more than half of the votes in Sunday’s election opening. The vote was the second held this year in Kosovo, following Kurti’s Vetevendosje party’s failure to win a majority in February.
Months of unsuccessful coalition talks led President Vjosa Osmani to dissolve parliament in November and call an early election.
With 87% of the votes counted after polls closed, Kurti’s party was leading.
To form a government on his own without a coalition, Kurti needs 61 seats in the 120-seat assembly.
The Kosovo Prime Minister has promised to swiftly form a new government, signalling a possible end to the year-long political deadlock that paralysed parliament and delayed key international funding.
