Venezuelan authorities have freed at least 99 prisoners who were detained during protests against President Nicolás Maduro’s re-election in 2024.
The releases come months after widespread demonstrations broke out following President Maduro’s victory in the July 2024 election, which was clouded by allegations of fraud. During the unrest, security forces arrested around 2,400 people, though nearly 2,000 have since been released.
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners said the latest releases began early on Christmas Day, adding that the conditions under which the detainees were freed have not been made public.
