Amid the border clashes, Thailand’s defence minister will join ongoing talks with Cambodia on Saturday that could lead to a truce, Prime Minister. The border clashes between the two Southeast Asian neighbours Thailand and Cambodia continued for the third week.
The Thai minister said that if an agreement is reached with the Cambodian defence minister, both sides would formalise a deal in line with a previous pact brokered with the help of U.S. President Donald Trump after an earlier round of clashes in July.
Officials from Thailand and Cambodia have been holding talks at a border crossing since Wednesday, even as hostilities persisted.
A ceasefire collapsed in early December, leaving at least 98 people dead on both sides and displacing more than half a million people.
Both countries have accused each other of actions that led to the breakdown of the July truce, which was later expanded into a broader agreement in October.
Thailand and Cambodia have long disputed sections of their 817-km land border, with the latest fighting stretching from forested areas near Laos to coastal provinces.
