At least 16 people were killed and several others injured after a bus lost control, struck a concrete barrier and overturned on Indonesia’s main island of Java early on Monday, authorities said.
The inter-province bus was travelling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta when it overturned while entering a curved exit ramp near the city of Semarang, police said.
Rescue teams and police arrived shortly after the accident and launched rescue operations at the scene. Fifteen people were pronounced dead at the site of the crash, while another victim later died in hospital.
Authorities said the cause of the accident has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
Transport accidents are relatively common in Indonesia due to factors including infrastructure conditions and traffic safety enforcement. In 2024, at least 12 people were killed when a car crashed into a bus and another vehicle on a busy highway. In 2019, at least 35 people died when a bus plunged into a ravine on the western island of Sumatra.
