Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnav, has said that India would soon become a major Semiconductor Nation in the world, and the Mohali-based Semiconductor Training Lab, SCL, would play a major role in this.

The Minister who inaugurated the Semiconductor Process Gallery and PARANGAT Semiconductor Training Lab at the SCL in Mohali yesterday, said that under the Prime Minister’s India Semiconductor Mission, this Punjab-based facility would be upgraded with an investment of Rs. 4500 crore.

He said it would be modernised with new tools and other requirements to increase its production 100 times more than the present one. With its upgradation, the SCL would fulfil the strategic, research and students’ requirements for chip fabrication.

The Minister asked the Punjab government to provide 25 acres of adjoining land to the SCL, Mohali, for the upgradation and its long-term growth for the better future of the institution. Clearing the prevailing doubts of SCL employees about privatisation of the institution, Vaishnav said that this facility would remain a government and a major Research and Development organisation.
