A powerful tornado tore through southern Brazil on Friday, leaving widespread devastation in its wake. State officials confirmed six deaths and at least 750 injuries in Parana’s Rio Bonito do Iguaçu region.

Winds reaching 250 kilometres per hour damaged nearly 90% of homes and public buildings. Authorities have declared a state of public calamity, unlocking emergency funds and federal assistance.

Around 1,000 displaced residents are taking shelter in facilities at Laranjeiras do Sul. Firefighters are working to clear debris and restore power and water supplies.

The government has announced three days of official mourning to honour the victims, while medical teams continue intensive care for the injured.
