Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the year-long commemoration of 150 years of the National Song “Vande Mataram” in New Delhi today. He will also release a Commemorative Stamp and Coin on the occasion.
The celebrations will feature mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” across public places, with enthusiastic participation from people of all sections of society.
Vande Mataram was written by Bankimchandra Chatterji on Akshaya Navami, November 7 in 1875. It was first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan as part of his novel Anandamath in 1882.
Vande Mataram was adopted as India’s National Song by the Constituent Assembly in 1950 and first sung by Rabindranath Tagore at the 1896 Congress Session in Calcutta. Vande Mataram, as a political slogan, was first used on 7 August 1905.
Invoking the Motherland as a symbol of strength, prosperity, and divinity the song became an enduring emblem of India’s unity and national pride.
In a social media post, Prime Minister Modi said, the day marks a momentous occasion for every Indian and described Vande Mataram as a stirring call that has inspired generations and kindled an enduring spirit of patriotism across the country.
