Revolutionizing Saffron Farming: Advanced Robotic to empower growers

To modernizing saffron cultivation, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, in collaboration with the SKUAST-Kashmir’s Advanced Research Centre for Saffron and Seed Spices, today conducted a live field demonstration of cutting-edge robotic technology in Pampore — the heartland of Kashmir’s world-famous saffron.

The event witnessed participation of leading scientists and experts from both MeitY and SKUAST-Kashmir, led by Sunita Verma, Chief Scientist and Group Coordinator, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.

The initiative aims to introduce automation and precision systems in saffron, the red gold cultivation, reducing manual labour, improving efficiency, and empowering farmers with innovative tools to enhance productivity and profitability.

During the live demonstration, experts showcased a range of robotic systems, including a Saffron Harvester, a Weed Management System, and an Automated Saffron Stigma Separation Unit—all developed to revolutionize the saffron industry through digital innovation.

Officials described the initiative as a transformative step towards sustainable, technology-driven saffron farming, reaffirming MeitY’s commitment to integrating advanced R&D with India’s traditional agricultural strengths.
