Thousands of students from across Serbia gathered in Novi Sad on the eve of the first anniversary of the railway station roof collapse that killed 16 people last November.
The tragedy sparked a nationwide protest movement, led by university students and professors, which has challenged President Aleksandar Vucic’s 13-year hold on power. Protesters say the student-led demonstrations have reignited public engagement across the country.
Marching toward Novi Sad, demonstrators are demanding a snap election in hopes of unseating Vucic and his populist Serbian Progressive Party.
The main commemoration featured sixteen minutes of silence in honour of the victims, followed by speeches from student leaders.
