Residents rode motorcycles to Rio de Janeiro’s government palace, demanding justice after the death toll rose to at least 119 in a police operation that became the deadliest in Brazil’s history.
Protesters called for accountability for what they described as a “massacre” by security forces, accusing authorities of excessive use of force and demanding justice for the victims of the deadly raid.
The fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 heavily armed officers took part in an operation targeting Brazil’s main drug-trafficking gang in northern Rio.
The operation left at least 119 people dead, including four officers. The Rio governor described it as an act of retaliation and claimed it was not intentional.
