Israel on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to the U.S.-backed ceasefire in Gaza, even as it conducted another airstrike in northern Gaza targeting alleged weapons storage sites.
The escalation follows the killing of an Israeli soldier on Tuesday, marking the worst flare-up since the ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump took effect on October 10, after two years of conflict triggered by deadly Hamas-led attacks on Israel.
Israel stated that the soldier was killed by gunmen in territory within the “yellow line”, from which its troops had withdrawn under the truce. Hamas has denied the accusation.
Wednesday’s airstrike, described by Israel as a targeted attack near Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, involved 24 targets, including a Hamas commander linked to the October 7, 2023, attack on a kibbutz.
The flare-up highlights ongoing challenges to achieving lasting peace, with issues such as Hamas disarmament, further Israeli troop withdrawals, and future governance of Gaza remaining unresolved.
