Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he had a positive meeting on Sunday with U.S. President Donald Trump, and that their respective teams will immediately begin discussions on tariffs and other trade matters.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur to ease tensions between Brazil and the United States, following Trump’s decision in August to raise tariffs on most Brazilian imports to 50% from 10%.

Ahead of the meeting, President Trump had said he hoped to reach agreements with Lula.

Lula had earlier described the tariff hike as a mistake, noting that the United States maintained a $410 billion trade surplus with Brazil over the past 15 years.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira confirmed that negotiations will begin immediately to work on finding solutions.
