A summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been put on hold, following Moscow’s refusal to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine — a development that has cast doubt over ongoing negotiation efforts.
A senior White House official confirmed that “there are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future.” This comes despite Trump’s earlier statement that he intended to meet Putin in Hungary “within two weeks or so” to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine. However, Putin has shown no willingness to make concessions.
Over the weekend, Russia sent a private diplomatic note — referred to as a “non paper” — to the U.S., reiterating its long-standing conditions for any peace agreement.
Trump, who recently held a phone conversation with Putin and met in person with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had hoped to revive momentum after their August summit failed to yield progress.
A preparatory meeting between U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, originally scheduled for Thursday in Budapest, has also been postponed by both sides.
