Manipu’s Mera Hou Chongba: Celebrating Hill-Valley Unity

In Manipur, the Mera Hou Chongba festival, which symbolises Hill-valley unity, is being celebrated today. Village chiefs of different indigenous tribal villages of hill districts have already reached the Manipur Royal Palace in Imphal to participate in the festival.

Manipur titular King and MP (Rajya Sabha) Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba formally received the the village chiefs.

The Mera Hou Chongba festival is celebrated in Manipur on the 15th lunar day of the Mera month of the Meetei calendar every year. It is is the only festival where both hill and valley indigenous communities are observed together in the state

Manipur titular King- Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba will lead a ritual march involving tribal village chiefs from the Manipur Royal Palace to the historic Kangla, where traditional rituals, including Mera Men Tongba, Yenkhong Tamba, exchange of gifts among the tribal village chiefs and valley people, will be held.

The festival will culminate with a showcase of cultural dances and a grand feast marking the brotherhood among different tribes in the state.

Mera Hou Chongba is the only festival in Manipur in which all indigenous communities participate, and it has significant importance in the unity and communal harmony of Manipur.
