Spain has backed the European Commission’s proposal to suspend trade agreements with Israel, citing concerns over the situation in Gaza. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that Spain’s stance is driven by both geopolitical and human rights considerations regarding Israel’s actions.
Speaking at a press conference in Madrid following talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Sanchez noted that Spain had also experienced “terrorist” attacks in the past. He went on to criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to handling such threats.
The meeting between Sanchez and Merz also covered cooperation on solar energy projects and the joint European Future Combat Air System (FCAS) fighter jet program.
