Secretary-General António Guterres briefs reporters on the start of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. "UN week offers every possibility for dialogue and mediation. Every opportunity for forging solutions. Thousands of leaders’ meetings will take place. I will hold over 150 bilateral meetings myself. I will use every one of them to press leaders to contact each other, to speak directly with each other. To bridge divides. To reduce risks. To find solutions. To get serious," said the Secretary-General.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed a 15-percent reduction in the UN’s regular budget for 2026, as the organization continues to face chronic liquidity challenges.

A senior UN official revealed that the revised budget now stands at USD 3.238 billion.

Initially, Guterres had planned to keep the 2026 budget at the same level as 2025 but later decided to reduce it as part of his UN80 Initiative.

The proposed cuts will affect the UN’s three main pillars: peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development, though programs aimed at least-developed nations will remain protected.

Additionally, the plan includes relocating at least 200 staff members from costly cities like Geneva and New York to more affordable locations such as Nairobi.

The budget proposal is expected to be put to a vote in the General Assembly before the end of the year.
