A frontline Newspaper Ad of Dabur created the war of words. The Ad says, “The Swadeshi Choice, Made in India for Indians. India’s favourite toothpaste brand was American, and Dabur was the Swadeshi choice. Born there not here.” The Ad published on front page of ‘The Times of India’ Newspaper.
The Ad is referring to a toothpaste without name, but the colors of the fonts are red, white and blue similar to US flag.
Recently in the 125th episode of Mann ki Baat Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “You should never forget about Swadeshi during these festivals. Gifts should be those made in India, Attire should be that woven in India, decor should be that made from materials made in India, Luminary items from India-made frills – and many more; everything in every need of life should be Swadeshi.”
He repeated “Say with pride ‘this is Swadeshi’, say with pride ‘this is Swadeshi’, say with pride ‘this is Swadeshi’.
All this strong words are coming lively as last week US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods. Then started the WhatsApp campaign started of boycotting American products.
According to the Euromonitor 2024 data Colgate has a 43% share of Indian goods market followed by Unilever’s Pepsodent and Dabur with 17%.
Indian Cooperative Amul also started branding it’s consumer products by publishing as “Made in India” on different social media platforms.
Now it’s interesting to see how much these Indian products will gain the momentum using the ‘Swadeshi’ or ‘Made in India’ punch.
