European Union (EU) foreign ministers remained divided on Saturday over how to respond to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While some member states are calling for strong economic pressure on Israel, others have opposed taking such steps.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that ministers have urged the United States to reconsider its decision to deny Palestinian officials participation in the upcoming U.N. General Assembly in New York.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, expressed concern that Israel’s current actions are eroding prospects for a two-state solution, adding that applying pressure would not empower Hamas.

In addition to the Gaza discussions, Kallas also stated that she has asked EU governments to submit proposals next week for a new package of sanctions on Russia in light of its continued conflict in Ukraine.
