Russia has launched its powerful missile and drone barrage on Kyiv, Ukraine in months, striking military and critical infrastructure. Hypersonic missiles ripped through neighborhoods overnight, killing over 20 people and wounding dozens.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the attack, calling it that Moscow wants terror, not peace.
The EU, Germany, France, and NATO responded with fierce condemnation. Moscow has denied targeting civilians and claimed it still seeks peace, but Ukraine and its allies aren’t buying it.
Described as a “massive attack against the cities,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the onslaught, claiming it shows Moscow has no interest in what he called “real diplomacy.”
Authorities say over 20 sites across Kyiv were targeted, with several high-rise apartment blocks and civilian infrastructure damaged.
The international community has expressed strong condemnation of the attack. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen voiced her outrage, revealing that even EU diplomatic offices in Kyiv were struck.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for a strong and united European response. He stressed that Putin’s war continues to terrorize Ukraine daily.
French President Emmanuel Macron, posting on social media platform X, wrote:
“Six hundred and twenty-nine missiles and drones in a single night over Ukraine: this is Russia’s idea of peace. Terror and barbarism.”
The United Kingdom echoed the outrage, summoned the Russian ambassador, and expressed concern over the attacks in the capital, Kyiv.
NATO chief Mark Rutte also condemned the strikes and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Despite the deadly barrage, the Moscow Kremlin on Thursday claimed it remained interested in pursuing peace talks.
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian forces were targeting only military and related infrastructure, denying deliberate strikes on civilians. He also pointed to ongoing Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
