Since 1973, Ladakh has experienced the heaviest rainfall in August, with incessant rain continuing for the past 24 hours. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the Meteorological Observatory at Yourthung, Leh, recorded 44 millimeters of rainfall until 4 PM yesterday (Monday), making it the highest in August in over five decades.
The IMD has issued a further forecast for more rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours, with current weather conditions suggesting that the downpour may continue through Tuesday.
The persistent rainfall has severely impacted normal life across Ladakh, causing disruptions in transportation and daily activities.
As a result of the continuous rain and snowfall at higher altitudes, authorities have imposed regulated traffic on major passes, including the Khardongla Pass and Changla Pass.
Due to slippery road conditions, one-way traffic or temporary closures have been enforced to ensure safety.
The inclement weather has also affected air travel. All scheduled flights at Khushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, Leh, were cancelled on 25 August, 2025, except for one early morning flight.
Residents and tourists in the region have been advised to remain cautious as the weather conditions persist.
