India faces intensified monsoon activity as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gujarat until August 30 and Maharashtra starting Tuesday. This is due to a low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and an emerging system over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Extremely heavy rainfall struck Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, with up to 29 cm recorded in Dausa.
Delhi-NCR endured thunderstorms and heavy rain on the 24th, triggering yellow alerts for light to moderate showers until the 29th. In Maharashtra, Mumbai anticipates yellow alerts with heavy downpours on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Pune expects moderate rains during Ganesh Utsav.
The IMD has also forecast isolated very heavy rainfall for Odisha on Monday and Tuesday, Coastal Karnataka from Wednesday to Friday, and Kerala from Tuesday to Friday. Thunderstorm risks persist nationwide. Urban flooding and disruptions are expected in affected states.
Torrential overnight rainfall battered Jammu, inundating low-lying areas and damaging several houses and roads. Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have issued advisories in response, amid an IMD alert for moderate to heavy rainfall across the Union Territory. The weather department has warned of intense rainfall, with the possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in high-altitude areas until 27 August.
