Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled a potential shift in Israel’s ceasefire stance, indicating a preference for a comprehensive deal that would secure the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas in a single phase, rather than through multiple staged agreements.
This development comes as Egypt and Qatar work on a new framework aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire. According to Arab officials, the proposal includes key provisions such as the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Israel’s ongoing threat to expand its offensive into the few remaining areas of Gaza—home to around 2 million displaced civilians—has drawn growing international criticism. Analysts suggest the pressure campaign may be aimed at pushing Hamas toward a deal.
Hamas continues to hold 50 hostages from the October 7, 2023, attack, with Israeli estimates suggesting only 20 are still alive.
Meanwhile, Egypt is advocating for an initial 60-day ceasefire that would secure the release of some hostages and increase humanitarian aid, in hopes of paving the way for a permanent truce.
