U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Monday to deploy the National Guard in the capital has triggered strong backlash from citizens. Protesters gathered in large numbers, chanting “Trump must go now” and holding banners calling the move a “national disgrace.”

At a White House press conference, Trump cited the “lawless situation” in Washington, suggesting similar deployments may follow in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and other Democratic strongholds. He claimed the capital had been overtaken by “gangsters and criminals” and announced that Attorney General Pam Bondi would oversee police operations.

However, Washington’s Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser, refuted Trump’s narrative, stating that the city has recorded the lowest violent crime rates in over three decades.

Critics argue that the decision carries racial undertones, as Trump appeared to single out majority-Black, Democrat-led cities such as Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington while discussing urban crime.
