Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to extend an ongoing ceasefire following last month’s deadly clashes along their disputed border. The decision came Thursday after Thai Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha signed a joint statement.
The ceasefire was initially brokered in late July after five days of intense fighting that left 43 dead and displaced over 300,000 people.
Both sides have now pledged to halt all military movement near the border and to allow ASEAN observers to monitor the truce. The agreement also calls for a follow-up meeting within a month and a joint effort to counter misinformation to help de-escalate tensions.
The recent violence was triggered by renewed disputes over ancient temples claimed by both nations.
