Prime Minister Narendra Modi on today inaugurated the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at ICAR PUSA in New Delhi.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the government has recognised farmers’ strength as the foundation of the nation’s progress. He also stressed that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said that Dr. Swaminathan went beyond biodiversity and introduced the visionary concept of bio-happiness.
The Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and a centenary memorial stamp dedicated to Professor MS Swaminathan.
Known as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, Professor Swaminathan is credited with saving millions from starvation through his landmark work in enhancing the productivity and production of wheat and rice crops during the 1960s and 1970s.
Prime Minister Modi also presented the M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace to Prof. Ademola A. Adenle of Nigeria. Prof. Adenle has led 15 years of pioneering research on genetically modified organisms in Africa. The award included a citation and a cash prize of 25,000 dollars.
